The Eastern Orthodox Church would wholeheartedly agree with you. Not every tradition holds to the evangelical or western view of that God had to punish Jesus in order to forgive us.

I find it fascinating that what is seen as a universal orthodox belief (Penal Substitutionary Atonement) is not universal nor is it particularly orthodox.
