Should I Forget Who I Am

Should I forget who I am,
who you are, and all the moments
in between you and me —
the empty space that makes my days —
please do not weep or feel that I
am lost, broken, or alone.

Do not grieve as if I’m gone.
I am still here relearning how
to live, relearning that sometimes
life is better lived embracing
what is now. For everything
is transitory but for love.

Please do not be upset with me
or I will lose the peace I’ve found
the first time since I was young.
I am in the moment, holding
everything anew and close.
Was I diminished as a child?

Now, I am a child again —
please embrace me more, not less.
Sit with me as I grow young
and older still. Care for me
as I once cared. Do not forget
me though I may forget your name.

You are still here, my dear — buried
deep somewhere within my heart.
