The possibility of a man “surviving” inside a large fish isn’t the issue (although “several scientists” sounds a bit vague—and exactly how would they prove the possibility anyway?).

(It just wouldn’t disturb me to discover it actually happened or didn’t happen).

The style of the document itself and the historical-cultural setting seems to suggest something else.
