I’ve often thought if the Bible is made up of a variety of literary genre, why couldn’t this be an extended parable or even a novel? To believe so doesn’t somehow discredit the authority of the text, in any case (unless we somehow have to believe that every parable in the Bible has to be describing a real, historical event — e.g., there actually existed a historical rich man who ignored an equally historical poor man named Lazarus…)
